Aerodynamic rim testing confirmed that the higher the rim profile, the lower the drag. You can also see the turbulence that forms behind the rim creating resistance (N). In terms of aerodynamic drag and strength, the IDEA T45 / C45 rim model achieves the best result.

For the construction of road bikes, we recommend combining medium-high 35 / 45mm rim profiles with the DT Swiss AeroComp or DT Swiss Competition spikes. For thinner models of spokes, it is necessary to count with lower strength (recommended for riders up to 75 kg).

For time trial models, the IDEA T55 / T80 combination is optimal.

Aerodynamic testing of the spokes brought an unexpected difference between the aero and the classic spike. The difference in resistance between Aerolite and Competition is up to 4.

Each of the spikes tested has its use in a given type of wheel set. Road bikes (DT Swiss Aerocomp or Aerolite). MTB bikes (DT Swiss Competition or Competition Race). Footbike (DT Swiss Competition) for maximum lateral strength.

Carbon rims generally have high lateral and axial rigidity, however, the differences between the characteristics of each model divide the rims into the disciplines for which they are most suitable. Thanks to the resulting numbers we are able to adapt the wheel sets to your weight, dispicpine and type of use.

We also compared the IDEA M30 rim with the aluminum rim (ALU specimen). The difference in lateral and axial strength was up to 4, which only proves that the main benefit of carbon rims in addition to weight is high strength.

Already at the beginning of testing we found out that the aero spike has about 4x lower resistance than the classic round, but in terms of strength are different results. Due to its shape, the round tip has roughly the same properties in both measurements. The Aero spike has its advantages primarily in the tensile direction, but loses side load.

These properties practically select spikes into the disciplines for which they are applicable. Aero spikes are best suited for road wheel rims with rim brakes where there is the greatest demand for tensile strength. Due to their lateral rigidity, the round tips are suitable for disc brakes and scooters. (When selecting the spokes, it is also necessary to take into account the rider's weight and cycling level.)

For the long life of the string, the most important thing is the correct entanglement and also the distribution of the applied forces over the entire length of the spike. The new Straigtpull entanglement in combination with the asymmetric rim is clearly the most gentle solution for long lasting wheels. Thanks to the straight pull of the toe from the hub to the rim, the toe is nowhere to break and the forces are continuously distributed throughout its length. The asymmetric rim, in particular with disc brakes, aligns the angles at which the spokes point towards the rim.
